sorry, sorry for the extra confusion!

You see, Gmail keeps messages sorted by thread... each thread comes up
with the date of the *most recent* post to it... and the number of
posts in the thread.  I added up all these numbers and got 45, not
thinking that only the most recent post to each thread was from
yesterday or today.  Silly mistake!
