Well, you are def. right on about the 4066 being a better way to go...

Those boxes look very cool though!
Any idea what type of signal they are EXPECTING?

You could build a buffer and experiment, that should provide adequate 
protection for your X0X or whatever...

You could probably put together a 4066 based switching system just as 
quickly, and then drop it into the cool looking box, using all the plugs and 
what not.
