Problem solved!

I changed the VCA decoupling capacitor and the problem went from "very 
bad" to "unnoticeable". At the same time I also did the "ground loop 
removal" modification, so that may have had some effect as well.

Thanks for the hints - they really were the key to solve the problem anyway!
