The problem is when these variations have a discernible pattern and/or
one voice sticks out. You'd get all sort of wierd unwanted "accents"
that only by chance would be in the right place.
So in your example if two of the trumpet players were masters of their
instrument and one was a beginner and they decided to hand off each
note in succession to the next player, you'd surely find the sound
objectionable or at least strange even if you could live with the
beginner playing the tune all by itself.
