I'm not sure what a sonic terrain is... do you really need a
frequency independent phase shift rather than a constant time delay?
The propagation speed of sound in air is pretty much frequency
independent (well, almost, there is dispersion), so to create the
illusion that a sound source is nearer or farer away would require a
constant delay, no?
