What do you expect?

Not sure, how it works in other countries, but in Germany universities 
are usually *proud* of the fact, that they only teach "concepts" and 
"methods", and anything else is left to the students as a voluntary 
spare-time assignment. Sometimes you even get the idea, that practical 
knowledge is something being frowned upon (and I still do remember how I 
was once criticized for having a "too engineer-like approach" during my 
time as a PhD student).

And with most of (mainstream-)EE nowadays taking place in the fields of 
FPGA design and/or DSP, I'm not too surprised that they know zilch about 
resistor color codes.
