As everyone noted, I should have put a "Property of Aaron Lanterman" or a 
"Not trash, do not discard" or some sort of sign on it.

The whole department knows about it now, so it's started a discussion.

In the building my office is in, the custodial staff doesn't touch 
anything that doesn't have "basura" written on it if it's not in a trash 
can and I got used to that... this happened in a different building.
