Sorry if I'm being blond, but why not just set up a mail filter/rule  
that moves messages with "[sdiy]" in the subject to a specific  
folder?  Pine can do that, OSX Mail client can do that, I think  
Outlook can do it too (but I only use it for work and don't need that  
functionality).  Then you (a) maintain thread consistency, and (b)  
have a MUCH better idea of how much traffic there is on a given day  
(just count the number of new messages).  And it makes it much easier  
to view by thread, or sender, or date, etc.
