[sdiy] using a 4051+counter as a sequencer core

Today I was breadboarding a project using a 4051 and a counter (here a
MC14518) to step through a series of taps on a fixed phaser for a wild
flanger project that I am working on. It dawned on me that this might work
as a sequencer. I think I've thought of this before, but I suppose I
dismissed it as too simple. I mean I don't think I've ever seen anyone else
do it. So is my brain soggy today and I'm missing something or would this
work. Obvious advantages do pop up easy use of a synchronous counter and if
you used something like a 4516 you could get easy up down. Come to think of
it the idea sort of reminds me of Ken Stone's sequential switch circuit. I
think I'll look that over again.
