Howdy,

 One cool trick you can do is build a box with Douglas
fir. Stain with cherry stain and you'll have CALIFONIA
REDWOOD! It is very convincing. my other suggestion is
to browse the junk shops garage sales, etc. and look
for a wood case/bookshelf/table that has wood you find
attractive. Take it home, saw it up, and build a
cabinet.
