| Try using a Stepper motor unstead.

|
| Very cheap, have to build some interface circuitry, but the
| tactile feel is I think amazingly better. I've been picking up
| surplus diskdrive ones for $1.

| I came to the same conclusion after noting that anything over about 16ppr
| cost $50+, until I found :
|
| Sure, stepper motors are a little bulky, but the extra mass makes them
| feel *awesome* and 100ppr is easily achievable with cheap ( $3 ) surplus
| units that panel mount fine and fit 1/4" shaft knobs.
|
| Got my stepper motors from Herbach&Rademan for $2.95. Really being able
| to give the old knob a good hard spin and have it zoom off like an old
| Tempest controller is nice. This plus acceleration makes controlling
| 15bits of controller data total cake. And you wont have to pull a
| Roland and add any wieght to the unit to make it feel like theres
| something inside the box...
