With the "Amen to that" I wasn't thinking about the individual plug-in 
writer, but rather thinking in bigger terms like NI bringing out a 
hardware synth. 

And like with their other software, they'd just outsource that job, too. 
Just with the difference, that the FPGA designer wouldn't have to 
disassemble/rev-eng the Windows software, but instead becoming some math 
or at least C(++) code.

Always remember how Terratec started -- they printed the cardboard boxes 
for Soundblaster cards. Today, they manufacture a whole bunch of sound 
cards and accessories.

As someone who made a living from VHDL design, I'm fully aware of that ;)

I wasn't being sarcastic. It's exactly the point.

People just don't want to pay the price. And those, who look into the 
box and see like a $20 FPGA say "why does this box cost $399" not seeing 
how much the casing, front plate costs, how much you had to invest in 
advance (for the software it's just the compiler and maybe some library 
license) etc.
