I agree. I am not sure of the price target.
I like the NCP1729 used as a voltage inverter. Vcc from 1.15-5.5V
(perfect for 2-3AA),
Iout of 50mA. Place the anode of the led on Vcc and the cathode on the
-Vout. Use the /SHDN to turn the LED on and off. Using this part as an
inverter, rather than a doubler, saves two diodes. Price of the IC is
probably around $0.80-$0.90 in small quantities.
