The input is probably 10K or 22K, so it's probably not an impedance issue.

My guess is that the headphones output is one of those new, hi-falutin, class-D low voltage headphone drivers, hanging from the +5V or +3.3V rail.

My single AAA battery powered MP3 player works great with hi-efficency headphones, but just doesn't want to drive the levels that "real-world" interfacing demands.
