There were several nice balanced-output discrete transistor mic preamp
circuits that were often referenced on the usenet audio group (in the
days before web browsers).  These circuits were typically used to
improve the Radio Shack PZM mic's, which were inexpensive, readily
available and fun to modify.

So, do a web search for 'pzm schematic', you'll find them.
