... but it doesn't have much to do with the severe overdrive of
distortion pedals.
A lot of overdrive also means a lot of gain, and thus amplifying the
noise that
goes into the distortion circuit. Therefore, a low noise VCA is
recommended, and
a 3080 doesn't qualify for this. I'd simply use a Vactrol VCA (LDR as
upper leg,
fixed resistor as lower leg of viltage divider).
(That old circuit of mine is ok if you already have a strong,
low-dynamic signal to go into the VCA; but nothing more.)
