I've used all 3 techniques depending on the size of the hole I'm cutting
and what time of night it is - plus an additional two:
- using the largest hole cutter I have that fits in the hole (okay,
similar to drilling lots of little holes but a bit quicker)
- using a hacksaw (or fretsaw)
It's always a good idea to file down the holes, btw!
Generally, the angle grinder is the quickest, but it's only really
suitable for wide/tall slots or big holes.
This tool

also an option; like an angle grinder, except it's designed to be used
edge-on. The discs are also much smaller, so you can do smaller holes.
