I was wondering: can stepped drills actually drill the initial
hole or do you need to pre-drill those with something else?
As I see some of them have a flat tip...
I'm currently using a stepless one that can drill the hole
from scratch, but needs to have the depth of the drill
fixed to get (more or less) the right size hole. So I always
need to do some practice holes (and not out on the course) when
changing to a different size. Hole size isn't exact either,
but that usually isn't a problem. Biggest plus is that
once you get the depth fixed for the right size hole,
you can drill dozens of them very quickly. You do need
to do some deburring though.
Main reason I have it is that I needed something like this
and the local store didn't have anything else and I couldn't
be bothered to order one over the internet ;-)
But if a stepped one works much better, I might be
persuaded to get one after all.
As a picture usually says more than a k of words:
