Anthony,
It seem to me that if you want the typical power tube distortion that you
would want a pair of EL84s operating push-pull biased to operate in some
variation of Class B (B2?). A single output tube will generally be biased to
operate Class A. The harmonic content will be different.
There are several tube gurus on this list.
