I forgot to mention the best part. The amplitude of the steps can be varied
from a linear to a logarithmic response. Lots of harmonic variety there!

>For those still interested in this waveshaping device I have good news. I
>have been working on the prototype of the MkII and so far it's a success. I
>have the core circuit up and running with all the new changes. Here is a
>synopsis of the new circuit:
>
>Bit depth increased from 5 bits to 20 bits.
>Continuously variable from 1-20 bits.
>New control to vary the "pulsewidth" of output waveform (works on saw, tri,
>sine etc).
>Decreased parts count.
>Operating current reduced significantly.
>Greatly reduced power supply interference.
>VCA not needed - the 3080 is gone.

>The waveshaper works on the concept of a variable bit depth A/D > D/A
>converter. The converter has no sampling clock. The signal is derived from
>a resistive D/A converter tied directly to the output of an A/D converter
>with a linear amplitude output instead of a binary representation output.
>The device uses LM3914 bargraph display drivers for it's core. Feeding in a
>triangle wave results in a stepped ziggurat shaped output. The bit depth
>alters the number of steps in the shape all the way down to a basic square
>wave. Each step creates a new harmonic set not in the original wave.
>The Aztec is designed to work with both audio rate signals and CV signals
>of any kind within a 0-10V range.
>
>Now I have some glue circuitry to design. Schematic will be posted soon..
