I'm not sure I agree that it is quite necessary to layout in the same
alignment. You DO have a lot less troubles... but if you use sockets
(I do) the orientation becomes obvious.

I don't think its forbidden, just disliked...

Using an LM324 or TL074 with TL072 is the perfect example... it WANTS to
be backwards from a power supply standpoint.  On a single sided design its
significant, in PTH its not a lot of extra trouble.

I might put one backwards to maintain routing channels open
