The MATs are supposed to be higher quality, particularly lower bulk 
resistance. That's what Paul S. uses in the MOTM oscillators.

You can also look at the SSM2210/SSM2220 - I forget which is which. Those 
showed up in some projects by my students.

Also, my students used a lot of the Japanese pairs, 2SC798 and 2SC1583. 
They can be found for around $1.25. Not as good as the SSM, LM394, etc. 
but not bad, it seems, for a lot of things. Look at the datasheet 
collection on my website users.ece.gatech.edu/~lanterma/ece4803, I give 
some sources for those.

I have both Ken's and Ray Wilson's VCO boards. I plan to socket the LM394s 
so I can try different pairs and see what the difference is.
