Here's an idea how to build a phaser that is not so
Vactrol-hungry, but shows the typical Vactrol behaviour:
Build the all pass stages with diodes for the VC resistors,
and use one global Vactrol in the CV path to control all
the diodes.
That way, you can even switch the Vactrol-typical slew
on and off.
For diodes, stack 20 cheap Si diodes for each stage (old
EMS trick) in order to keep signal level high, impedance
in a reasonable range, and noise down.
Or another method, taken from the Schulte Compact A
and Mutron Bi-Phase:
Group several LDRs around a single light source, and
put them into a tiny black enclosure.
In other words, grow a LDR plantation around a little
sun. :-)
