There's two things I always wanted to try

1) 'holding' some of the bits low, as you've done, but not in order, so for 
example just have bit 2 low, it should, if my thinking is correct, add a 
whole bunch of extra harmonics at 4 times the incomming frequency (2 times 
if bit 1 is held low).

2) 'swapping' some of the bits around, so for example

0 -> 0
1 -> 3
2 -> 1
3 -> 5
4 -> 4
5 -> 2
6 -> 6
7 -> 7

I've not a clue what this would do, though obviously swapping bit 7 with 
with one of the others would change the fundamental pitch of the incomming 
wave, I think....

Anyway, it's another one of those "I wonder what it sounds like, I'll try it 
when I have time" ideas.
