It should be noted that there is virtually no 'lead' in solder
fumes... temperature is way below the gasseous phase.
Its the flux... and the more agressive the flux is, the more you
need the hood.
I do not use one... I have a fan if it is an issue. Most times I'm
soldering
a couple of joints at a time. (wrap, solder... think think wrap,
solder)
I use a dry brush (see archives :^) to keep the tip clean... so there is
never
a constant plume of flux smoke rising.
USE a solder flux that does not irratate you. I had a roll of some
off-the-wall
Japanese brand that I did NOT like. The Kester "44" is pretty benign to
me...
