Dear Colleagues at SDIY,
Lead is a heavy metal that formed on earth millions of years ago as an end of life product from radioactive minerals. It is a "natural waste" product. Modern science and medicine proved its toxicity to living beings especially to human beings. It is extremely poisonous to the nerve cells since it just kills them. Children who are exposed to lead such as in "lead paint" or in "BB" gun pellets develop retardedness if they injest these things in sufficient quantities. The effect on adults of injesting lead through contamination of all sorts (of fingers, mouth or lead in drinking watre for example) is very harmful. The presence of lead and many other heavy metals such as mercury, chromium or even aluminum, in the blood stream or other body tissues causes a severe weakening of the immune system to say the least. Once the immune system is weakened, then many diseases surface as symptoms such as: rheumatoid arthiritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and of course cancer,
to mention but a few. These symptoms do not show immediately. They take a long time because the effect is accumulative over the years.
So please be careful when handling lead and make sure that you or anyone in your family do not get exposed or injest any lead contaminated matter. For example: wear gloves when soldering if you can; if not, then wash your hands with soap immediately after finishing. Also, do not inhale the fumes coming out of the soldering wire, and never put the soldering wire in your mouth.
There is a lot of information that I can put in here about this topic, but I do not want to bore you my friends and you can always search the internet to find this information. Just be as careful as much you can for your own sake. Take care.
Regards,
Ahmad

I recommend you go RoHS as soon as possible, sir! ;)
My worst is probably not being strict about washing my hands I think. Maybe being too lazy to clean flux off as well.
