The problem they have there is that they discarded the massive gain 
stage at the head. It starts with 5x gain and gets gigher from there. 
With only a 4 volts peak to peak signal going through that array of 
opamps, they will never clip and you will only cover a tiny space near 
the zero crossing in the transfer curve.

I've built this as shown in the schematic and it works perfectly.
