A nice 1 chip solution would be perfect :)
But looking at the 7555 datasheet I can't see how I would avoid having
to stick a full wave rectifier in front which then requires additional
opamps. I initially thought the THRESHOLD input could be used to detect
positive peaks and the !TRIGGER input to detect negative peaks, but they
each give different output states.
