Yep, most designs one sees using Vactrols normally have a parallel resistor
to keep that high resistance in check - look at Buchla's 291 BPF for
example.  I'm working on a Vactrol phase shifter now, and I'm using 1.5M in
parallel with the LDR's to keep them from going overboard.  As for the other
problem, I like Mark Verbos' answer - never thought of that.

I manage to do that quite regularly myself ("Now why didn't that reply show
