I guess the CCD's the DOD unit used didn't have photodiodes. I'm looking at the datasheet and then it occured to me: if I want to run audio through it - well there's no input other than the imaging input. And gates for the sample & hold and the shift registers. Maybe earlier ones brought the celsl out to a pin?
