I've been soldering at 700ºF since 1992 when I bought my Weller
station. ( chose the temp., based on our customer's advice, for
general purpose parts / etc.)
At work - one our Repair tech.s mentioned to me, that 600ºF is the
best for surface mount, as many of those parts can be more sensitive
to heat.
If I recall correctly - the official industry soldering tech. manual,
mentioned between 600-700º for SMT and 700-800ºF for birnak items.
(IF, I recall correctly. Read it front to back, about 3 months ago.)
I hope this helps. :) My station has been far faster than the 25 watt
iron that I used for years before that. :)
And I've never knowingly killed anything at 700. :)
