This is a Force Sensing Resistor in strip format... from what i read, this would be good for preassure sensors (harder you press, the lower the resistance)... but i'm not sure if it varies resistance in relation to location on the strip, which is what i usually think of as a ribbon controller.
i have one of the doepfer controllers, and like it fine... wish the controller itself was under 19" is my main complaint. i also have a PCB for the tellun Sword of Kahless, which is supposed to address some shortcomings other folks have seen...
