I downloaded the demo version of designworks, from Capilano.com - the Osmond
people.
It's HEAVY duty! It looks like a great tool, but is probably overkill for
what I need at the moment.

I guess it's photoshop or something for the time being then....

It is a pcb layout program, and is simple to use, but the beta version keeps
crashing. A workaround is to save after every few changes you make. This
doesn't *always* prevent crashing, but it's more or less useable. I think
the limit is that you can't save, or export as gerber files, unless the
design has less than 700 pins, which is OK for small designs. At the moment,
I'm only using it to work out component placing for perfboard projects,
which has been a great help.
Thanks for all the replies everyone.
cheers,
Dave
