[sdiy] diy illuminated rubber membrane push buttons?

I had to make a pseudo-membrane keypad
with mechanical push buttons underneath.

It was a copy of a japanese design that
has a sheet urethane overlay... with
the switch legend silkscreened.

I could have done it that way but I'd have
to buy the urethane sheet. The minimum order
was a really silly large amount.

I ended up making a polycarbonate overlay...
with embossed keyswitches to make it flexible
enough to push the buttons. It was pretty
expensive with lots of tooling costs.

This was for an industrial 'diy' project
that would have used maybe a hundred or two
overlays.

I'd say this is not an easy DIY project.

Maybe someone else knows of some hobby
urethane materials ???
