[sdiy] Floating Point A/D?

Just a silly thought.
A slope integrating analog to digital converter (better a dual slope)
uses a counter to measure the charging time of a capacitor from an
unknown voltage to convert it to a digital representation.
What if the counter used were a floating point variable?
It would still be quantized, but at least the result would be
directly in floating point format.
Now if there were only practical a floating point DAC. I recall a
discussion I read bout this. It is theoretically possible using a cap
and an algorithm, but takes infinite time to resolve to a final value.
