A) The current Voyager does not use them
b) the article was just "suggesting" something, and obviously
the author has never designed production electronics.
c) these sorts of ICs are rarely used to reduct *cost*. Because
I can get 4000 5% SMT 0603 resistors for $17. I can get quad
op amps for 13 cents. I can get discrete transistors < 1 cent (in
*production* quantities, not 100 here and there from Digikey).
I can spend $35 and buy SMT parts for all the "core" circuitry
for any anolog synth.
The cost is NOT the "electronics". The cost is in the front panel,
the shipping box, the marketing (I can buy 1 *million* parts for what it costs
to
have a 10 x 20 booth at NAMM, staffed, air fare, hotels, etc).
