[sdiy] untuneable synth

Anyone ever have a synth you just can't get in tune?
  
  I had a paia that I couldn't tune.  I finally replaced the lm13700 in it, and it tuned right up after that!!
  
  Ive got another ASM-1 style VCO that I can just barely get in  tune.  The trimmer pot is turned up as far as it will go, and its  tuned over a few octaves.  If I had just a  bit more range, I  could get it in tune.
  
  Just wondering if these are common problems, and if you have to  sometimes modify other components in your circuit to get them in tune.
