[sdiy] Trying to establish confidence in my test equipment

There are precision voltage reference chips available for just about
any level of accuracy you might need (for synth use)

The data sheets show how to apply them. The LM4040 series
is one possible choice and you can get 10V and 5V models to
WAY better precision than your average synth.

Probably Analog Devices has some as well, and you could even get
a couple of free samples to try out (although these are usually not the
  MOST precise grades they make).

You might find this easier than buying a really good meter.
The Meter really is the best way to go, I just wanted to illustrate
that you can go father with shaky test tquipment and solid thinking
  than you might suspect !!!

My problem would be that I would not have the first
clue how to make a precision voltage reference.

Which came first, the Chicken or the egg? I believe
the answer is 'The Precision Voltage reference'.
