I just want to say that Waves software is awesome! If I "went digital" I'd 
want a dedicated PC running something from Steinberg and Waves plug-ins. 
Although I have to admit it's pretty pricey, but you can get different 
packages.

But still in the analog realm a few really good filters - 24 or 36 dB/oct 
and an envelope follower or two would do. I think a P2V converter is good 
for loosely tracking a filter though. But that's different than what you're 
talking about.
