the best way is to combine them. That is, detect for both from the dry
signal, then connect both control voltages to the same VCA. If you
compress, you will bring up the noise, but lose the dynamics you will
want the gate to see. If you gate first, you will then bring up the
noise in compression, reducing the effect of the gate.
