Three reasons ;-
1) Midi protocol is slow (31.25Kbaud is just painfull these days)
2) Its 'bulky' containing a lot of 'overhead' when transmitting data
3) it's limited to 7 bits for data (yeah you can stack multiple words, but 
then you're into NRPNs, by which time you're writing your own protocol!).
