Basically that's it. Specifically, you have a straight bar with teeth
on one side ("rack gear") and a round gear with teeth ("pinion gear").
This setup is also called a, drum roll please, Rack and Pinion. The
straight bar is attached to the pedal and moves up and down, which in
turn causes the pinion gear (usually attached to the shaft of the pot)
to rotate.
