[sdiy] silly question about NIMH batteries

I'm facing a similar problem with a portable
amplifier a friend wants to drive with gel cells 
recovered from an  uninterruptible power supply.
The cells are 6v but I can't assume they are identical, so 
I'm wiring it so you can charge each cell separately
(not at the same time) and then switch them in series
when working.
If the cells are in fact OK, then old UPS are a good
source.
