If you look at the short description of the IR3109 that Roland provides in
some of their service notes, it is mentioned that the internal buffers are
P-channel MOSFETs... these provide buffering for the external caps which are
directly connected to the IR3109 pins. MOSFETS are very easily damaged by
ESD unless gate protection is provided... no mention  is made of whether
protection diodes are present or not.
