You're referring to grid leak bias. I don't care for the way it sounds for
guitar.....clips funny. It was common to see grid leak used for mic pre's in
days of old. Why not just do a Champ style homebrew on the chassis? Use a
12ax and SE 6v6 with a suitable pwr transformer? There's always tons of old
Stancor's and the like on Ebay for cheap. Using the line operated approach
usually yeilds dirty sounding amps due to low available plate supply. But
some folks like that.......
