Hi all,
I bought a broken Moog Source to practice my repair skills on. Doesn't
hurt a bit that I really wanted one too ;) I am sure I will fix it
eventually if not immediately, so am already planning upgrades.
Encore Electronics sells a Midi Kit for the Moog source that adds bank
memory. 16 banks, 16 patches.
I used to think they upgraded the size of the rom chip, but then I
read on their site that to make memory space they wipe out the
sequencer capability.
"due to functionality, program space and user access considerations,
all of the sequencer and cassette functions have been removed."
They have their firmware on their site, Do you think burning their
firmware to a ROM and just plugging it into the Source directly might
give you the bank upgrade if put into an otherwise stock Synth?
The MIDI stuff might not work without the hardware, or you might mess
up the whole thing, but it seems like one could figure out how to rob
the sequencer memory without putting in a whole midi kit. That is what
I want even more than midi capablitly, 16 patches is a bit limiting.
Seems low risk if one uses a different ROM than your stock one.
Also, their board doesn't look that complex. $250 seems quite pricey.
Anyone ever made something similar themselves? Would it be wrong to
build my own board to use their firmware? They put it up there for
anyone to download, and have no licensing statement that precludes me
doing so... The moral dilemma...
Take care,
Jester
