   Sorry to jump in so late in the thread...

   If you don't need a lot of current, then I would suggest using an
ICL7660S.  It's a single chip inverter (basically charges a cap and
then switches it to create a negative supply).  There are two grades,
the normal 7660 which is useful for generating -5V, and the 7660S which
will allow for -12V.  Again, won't net you much, and the noise on the
line is horrible, but it works for small load devices.
