The most significant difference is the emitter-base resistance Rbe.

You will need to compensate for Rbe no matter what you use.

More expensive pairs will need less compensation then inexpensive ones.

Even inexpensive pairs can be compensated to within +/- 5 cents over  
8 octaves (Korg Poly 6 tuning spec for SSM VCO).
