regarding soundblaster live cards - there's a nice project called "kX
project" (http://www.kxproject.com) that offers nice patchable dsp
programming of the emu 10k processors on those soundcards and also
enables you to put more than 1 card in a windows box. i'm currently
running mine with 3 cards. it also adds ASIO support and plugin
effects for that dsp application. it's actually something like reaktor
only hardware-based but with higher-level modules (no OSCs and such -
mostly effects). i recommend this to anyone that still uses
sbLive/audigy.
