[sdiy] RoHS

Also note... all "leaded" components are not necessarily
  compatible with the lead-free process.

Some "lead-free" components are not compatible either...

The higher solder temperatures may exceed the package
limits. Just because a manufacturer removes the tin-lead
plating from the leads... does not guarantee success...

No, you do NOT need leaded components. Lead-free components are 100%
compatible with leaded solder. Lead-free solder, however is NOT
compatible with leaded parts!!! So it _IS_ a VERY good thing that the
parts are being shipped lead-free, because EVERYONE can use them.

What you will find happening in the future is people not being aware of
the above issue and trying to use lead-free solder to try and repair
equipment made with leaded solder. So as Harry and a few others have
pointed out, stock up on leaded solder if you plan to continue to
repair anything made before July 1, 2006!

Yes. A very large percentage of our products are sold overseas through
distributor networks. The distributors have to comply with RoHS and as
a result, we must as well. And like most OEMs, we find that it isn't
cost effective to run two assembly lines to make both non-compliant and
compliant products.

   Cheers,

   Tony
